A brighter smile, close to home

If your teeth have lost a little of their brightness over the years, you are far from alone. It is one of the most common things people ask us about at The Haven Dental Practice.

We offer professional teeth whitening here in Earley, so you do not have to travel far to get started. Whether you have a big occasion coming up or simply want to feel a little more confident day to day, we will take the time to understand what you are hoping for and guide you towards the right option.

Whitening works by gently lightening the natural colour of your teeth. It is safe for your enamel when carried out under professional supervision, and the results can be genuinely lovely. We always begin with a consultation to check your teeth and gums are healthy and that whitening is a good fit for you.

If you have been searching for teeth whitening in Reading and wondering where to start, we hope this page answers your questions. And if anything is still unclear, please do get in touch — we are always happy to chat.

Which whitening option is right for you?

We offer two approaches to whitening, and both use professional-strength whitening gel that is only available through a registered dental practice.

In-chair whitening

This takes place in our treatment room in a single appointment. Your dentist applies the whitening gel directly to your teeth and activates it under a carefully controlled light. You can sit back, relax, and leave with noticeably lighter teeth the same day. It is a good choice if you have a special event coming up soon.

Custom take-home trays

We take impressions of your teeth and have a set of thin, close-fitting trays made just for you. You fill them with a small amount of professional whitening gel and wear them at home — usually for a set period each day over a couple of weeks. The trays are reusable, so you can top up your results later using fresh gel.

Many people find the take-home option fits naturally into their routine. Others prefer the speed and simplicity of in-chair treatment. During your consultation, we will talk through both options so you can choose the one that suits your lifestyle and your budget.

Why do teeth become discoloured?

Teeth can darken or stain for several different reasons, and the cause often affects how well whitening will work.

Surface staining builds up on the outside of the tooth over time. Coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking are the most common culprits. This type of discolouration tends to respond very well to whitening treatment.

Discolouration that comes from inside the tooth is a little different. It can happen because of certain medications taken during childhood (some antibiotics, for example), past trauma to a tooth, or simply the natural ageing process — as we get older, the inner layer of the tooth gradually becomes more visible through the outer layer, making teeth look darker or more yellow.

Whitening works best on surface staining and on the kind of general yellowing that comes with age. Deeper discolouration can sometimes be improved with whitening, but results vary from person to person. That is why we always assess your teeth first — it means we can give you an honest picture of what whitening is likely to achieve for you, rather than promising something we cannot be sure of.

What happens at your whitening appointment?

Everything starts with a short consultation. Your dentist will look at your teeth and gums, ask about your dental history, and talk through what you would like to achieve. If whitening is right for you, they will explain exactly what will happen next.

For in-chair treatment, your gums are protected with a soft barrier before the whitening gel is applied. You simply relax in the chair while the gel does its work. The appointment is comfortable and straightforward.

For take-home trays, we take impressions at the practice, and your custom trays are ready within a few days. We will show you how to load the gel, how long to wear the trays each session, and what to do if your teeth feel a little sensitive.

Aftercare is simple. In the first 48 hours after treatment, it helps to avoid heavily coloured foods and drinks — things like coffee, curry, and red wine. Your dentist will give you clear written guidance to take away with you. Some people notice mild sensitivity during or just after treatment; this is normal and usually settles quickly on its own.

How long do whitening results last?

Results are not permanent, but with a little care they can last a good while — often a year or more, and sometimes longer.

How long your results last depends on your diet and habits. If you drink a lot of coffee or tea, or if you smoke, the colour will fade more quickly. Cutting back on these things — or rinsing with water after them — makes a real difference.

The good news is that maintaining your results is easy. If you had custom take-home trays made, you can simply order fresh whitening gel from us and do a short top-up session every few months. This keeps your teeth looking their best without starting from scratch each time.

Good oral hygiene helps too. Brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and keeping up with your routine check-ups all contribute to a cleaner, brighter smile over time.

We are always here if your results start to fade and you would like a top-up — just give us a call or mention it at your next appointment.

Is teeth whitening right for me?

Whitening works well for many people, but it is not the right solution for everyone. It is worth knowing a few things before you decide.

Whitening gel only affects natural tooth enamel. It will not change the colour of crowns, veneers, or white fillings. If you have restorations on your front teeth, your dentist will talk you through how that might affect the overall result.

Whitening is also not suitable if your teeth or gums are not currently healthy — for example, if you have active decay or gum disease. These things would need to be treated first.

If your discolouration is quite deep — such as staining from certain antibiotics — or if you are unhappy with the shape or position of your teeth as well as their colour, there may be alternatives worth considering. Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin applied to the surface of the tooth to change its shape, size, and shade. It can be a good option where whitening alone would not achieve the look you have in mind.

Your dentist will be straightforward with you about which route is most likely to give you the outcome you are hoping for. There is no pressure — just honest, friendly advice.

How much does teeth whitening cost?

The cost of whitening depends on which option you choose, and we want to be upfront that fees can vary. Rather than quote figures here that might change, we keep our full, up-to-date pricing on our fees page.

If you are a member of The Haven Membership Plan, you may be eligible for a discount on teeth whitening. You can find all the details on our membership page.

We understand that cost is an important part of the decision. At your consultation, we will give you a clear, written quote so you know exactly what to expect before any treatment begins. There are no hidden extras.

We believe that a healthy, confident smile should be accessible — and we do our best to make sure the process is transparent and straightforward from start to finish.
