Transition Away from Amalgam Fillings: A Healthier, Greener Future
Traditionally, what is known as dental amalgam, or silver fillings, have been considered a reliable and durable material for carrying out dental fillings. In recent years, though, the high mercury content of the alloy used in these fillings has raised concerns–both environmental and health concerns. At The Haven Practice, we will now be joining a globally-driven transition away from this material to other kinds of dental filling. What does this mean for you, and why the change?Explaining the Change
Dental amalgam, though referred to as silver fillings, is actually a silver alloy. This alloy comprises a range of metals, including tin and copper–but most importantly, liquid or elemental mercury. This mercury content has raised concerns, both for the health of the patient and the sustainability of our future, in more recent years. This initiative is driven by both the UK and the EU, in accordance with global efforts largely defined by the Minamata Convention on Mercury. What it Means For You
For any patient with existing amalgam fillings, there is no immediate cause for concern. Amalgam is stable once placed, and removal is generally not necessary. For all future fillings carried out by our team at The Haven Practice, we will use modern alternatives such as composite resin and ceramic fillings. Being equally durable and blending seamlessly with your natural teeth, while also being mercury-free, these alternatives provide functional and aesthetic benefits. Our Environmental Commitment
We understand that, as a modern dental practice, our responsibility goes beyond the immediate care of our patients. While this is and will remain our primary concern and driving force, our commitment to a green environmental future must be a key part of what we do. This transition to mercury-free materials will ensure we are contributing to local and global efforts to reduce pollution.Looking Ahead
